The Danish Association of Pharmaconomists represents about 5,500 pharmaconomists in Denmark and is a trade union for all pharmaconomists in Denmark, irrespective of place of work as well as for pharmaconomist students.

The Danish Association of Pharmaconomists was founded in 1946 and organises about 98% of all Danish pharmaconomists. The Association issues a publication for its members Farmakonomen (The Pharmaconomist), which is published 10 times per year.

Professional training

Training as a pharmaconomist takes three years.

The admission criterion is the upper-secondary school leaving examination. The theoretical component is supplemented by a long trainee practice period at a pharmacy and/or hospital pharmacy. The training corresponds to 180 ECTS points. 

The qualifications of pharmaconomists are regulated by law

A pharmaconomist is authorised to

  • dispense and check prescriptions
  • counsel customers about the use of medicine
  • dispense, sell and provide information about prescription and over-the-counter medicine
  • undertake specialist and managerial operation of branch pharmacies, and
  • undertake duty service
